Board Member Spotlight: Dr. Toni Brayer, Board President

DIFTL-Toni-Brayer-

We’re thrilled to have Dr. Toni Brayer as our new board president!

Dr. Brayer has practiced Internal Medicine in San Francisco for over 30 years and has also been a medical leader (Chief Medical Officer and CEO) within a large healthcare organization in Northern California. Her entire professional career has been in medicine and helping shape the direction for quality and better patient care. A perfect match for Do It For The Love!

Dr. Brayer is a mom of two (now grown) children and a brilliant 12-year-old granddaughter. She has a wonderful husband who has always supported her work and made it easy for her to think big.

She was introduced to Sara and Do It For The Love by a co-member on the Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area Board of Directors.

“Of course, I was already a fan of Michael Franti and Spearhead and even saw him perform at San Quentin once when I was ‘inside’ working with the inmates.”

Dr. Brayer says the passion and commitment of Sara and Michael, and the mission of bringing music to people who are suffering from illness, “spoke to my heart and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Quarantine Q&A

Has music played a role in helping you cope with 2020, how and what song or artist?

I love all music genres and play music in the car and home all the time. There is no way to be sad listening to Michael Franti's “Once a Day.” I show my age when I say I still love the Bee-Gees and Elton John when I’m feeling down. India Arie and Michael Franti both inspire me to be a better person.

Describe your ideal quarantine day in one sentence.

My ideal quarantine day is playing tennis, walking my little senior rescue dog, reading, and then cooking a great healthy meal. They say at the end of COVID, we will be “a Hunk, a Chunk or a Drunk.” I hope to be a well-read Hunk by using this precious time for self-improvement.

Share a funny, joyful, or inspirational story that happened to you or your family in 2020.

I found out I have a half-sister that I never knew about. I always wanted a sister and what a surprise! With all the main relatives gone from this earth, we can only speculate about the circumstances. But how wonderful to have modern technology (Ancestry.com) that brings us together in ways we never imagined.

What is the first thing you are most looking forward to doing when the world returns to some sense of normal?

I’m trying to be here now and enjoy the present, but I admit I am longing to travel, hear live music, see my brother, and be with friends in a loud restaurant, enjoying great food and drink.
