Samantha Meets Rob Thomas

October 23, 2015

The power of music can affect even those who are challenged to hear it. Samantha is nearly 15 years old. She was born with a cleft lip and palate and was diagnosed with a chromosome 18q deletion at age two. As a result, she is nonverbal, deaf and has severe cognitive and developmental delays.

“Though Sam is deaf, she has some residual hearing, wears hearing aids and she truly loves music therapy at school. She enjoys feeling the vibration of the music,” said Sam’s mom. “Ever since Sam was 6 months old, our parent-infant advisor told my husband, John, and I that Sam was a “hearing baby.” Music is what always motivated Sam to wear her hearing aids. Music is what made her happy and it still does.”

Sam requested to see Rob Thomas, of Matchbox Twenty, in concert and we were glad to send this very deserving family to a recent show in New Orleans.

“Matchbox Twenty’s and Rob’s music have always been a part of our lives and Rob’s positive energy, great heart and excellent songwriting skills have been something our family has been able to relate to through some of the most difficult times we have experienced in our lives.”

They had an incredible night where they were treated as VIPs and invited backstage to meet Rob.

“When we arrived at the Saenger Theater, we were kindly escorted to a wheelchair accessible door. This is where we met Rob’s amazing tour management team. Minutes later, Rob Thomas entered the area and greeted us. I was in awe. He was such a kind, genuine person and so easy to speak to. Rob sat next to Sam, spoke to her and, though Sam was having a shy moment, she knew something very special was happening. We were then taken to see Rob’s guitars and we were allowed to stand on the stage to catch a glimpse of the beautiful theater from Rob’s perspective. This was so much more than we expected for Sam! We felt so important. My heart was full.

“The bright lights, the loud music and the fans were a major sensory experience for Sam and she tapped her right foot to the beat of the music, smiled, giggled and John, Sam and I had a spectacular time for two entire hours, without a worry in the world.

“I do not know how to begin to thank the Do It For The Love Foundation for this wonderful gift you have given to Sam and our family. This special night will remain in our hearts forever. I’m so inspired by the kindness and generosity we experienced by all. Moments like this restore my faith in humanity. You are all truly about hope, healing, music…and LOVE!”
