Mikayla & Javelin Meet Michael Franti

September 3, 2015

It’s been a challenging year for Mikayla and Javelin, two brave individuals living with their own sets of challenges. The two met at the August 2015 Michael Franti show outside of Portland, Oregon and found a connection that has strengthened their resolve to continue fighting through their hardship.

In 2014, after the concert at Edgefield, Mikaylahugged and talked with Michael about her video documentary that she was working on for an 8th grade project called “The Power of Music,” which she plans to turn into a feature film. In March of this year, she had a tragic accident where she fell 15 feet from a gym wall and broke her back in two places and her wrist very badly. She also suffered a concussion that has resulted in brain damage in two places. We welcomed Mikayla and her family back to the show this year, so she could follow up on her interview with Michael. She was able to watch the show from the side of the stage and dance with the band at the end of the show, with her father capturing the whole experience in photos.

“Wow, what an experience!” said Mikayla’s mother. “Thank you so much for your support. It was clearly a huge step in Mikayla’s healing journey. After the show, she said “Today is the first day of my NEW life” and I felt like she was the most “back” to herself as she has been since her accident.”

Javelin also joined this grant, noting that after months of battling late-stage throat cancer, that was the first day he felt like himself. The owner and baker at Promise Natural Foods and Javelin Bakery in Canyonville, OR for nearly 30 years, he was nominated by a friend who proudly presented a home-made blueberry pie to Michael backstage.

“I do not know how to thank you for all you did for me and my family,” Javelin said. “I had a blast and to be able to share it it with the people I love made it even more special. What you do is a gift to all the people you help. You have lifted my spirit and given me the strength to fight on. I am proud to be in this great Do It For The Love family. I know that you have touched so many people’s lives with all the love you give. Keep up the good work.  Love to Michael for all that he does and all of you at Do it for the LOVE. Peace. One love one heart one world one people.”
