Hawken Meets Hozier

October 20, 2015

Hawken is 18 years old and living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A member of the team at CureDuchenne nominated him for a wish grant, and shared with us a bit about Hawken’s remarkable and inspirational journey.

“Hawken has been in the fight for his life since he was diagnosed at the age of five. His muscles have been in a constant state of deterioration since that time and everything he does is to manage damage to his muscles. Through all of this he keeps an amazing positive attitude and is breaking all kinds of records for a boy with Duchenne. Typically boys with Duchenne are in a wheelchair by the age of 10 but Hawken is using his scooter and still able to walk short distances. Hawken is also doing something that very few Duchenne young men get to experience when he left for college this August. Hawken is starting a new chapter in his life as he explores the college life and goes for his degree in communications at USC. He also qualified for the presidential scholarship due to his amazing grades and great attitude.

” We were so glad to provide a healing night of music for Hawken with one of his favorite musicians, Hozier. Big thanks to AEG Live for helping to make this wish happen!

“This was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life because I was privileged to meet Hozier and then experience his concert thanks to the efforts of Do It For The Love,” Hawken said. “Everyone involved in making this dream a reality really went out of their way to make me feel special. Out of all of those at the meet and greet, my friends and I were afforded the most time with Hozier to talk with him about his experiences and his sudden rise to fame. Additionally, everything was made accessible and easy to get to, especially with my condition. His music really resonates with me, so getting to hear it live definitely inspired me to get through my illness and look towards the future. Even if I can’t do a lot of things because of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, I can still always say I met Hozier and went to one of his first major concerts in the US. Music has a supernatural power to connect us and take us to a metaphysical place. Thank you Do It For The Love for organize this event and experience that will no doubt affect me now and for the rest of my life!”
