Sara Talks about Vines & Vibes
August 26, 2018
On Feb. 8th, 2014 we had the pleasure of meeting 10-year-old Abby and her family, and treating them to an incredible evening of live music at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Before the show, there was a VIP reception, and it made perfect sense to include Very Important Person Abby and her family at this event. Abby and her 8-year-old sister Mia drew Michael Franti a beautiful picture to thank him for his gift of music, and Michael was delighted to receive it. He gifted them with his own guitar pick- which we found out today is already in a place of honor in their home!
When Abby was 4-years-old, she suffered a severe brain injury and life thereafter changed in the most challenging ways possible. Her mother Martha and father Bob shared with us that music is one of the things that puts a spark in her eye. Michael Franti & Spearhead’s music played an instrumental role in her journey and healing.
Her mother shared with us that music is one of the things that puts a spark in her eye. In the months following her injury at the Children’s Hospital Oakland, music played an important role. Michael Franti, G. Love, Ben Harper, Amos Lee and Taj Mahal’s music kept everyone going. With little to do in-between neurologist, orthopedist, physiatrist and therapist sessions, they turned to music and found a way to connect. Music made Abigail smile, even laugh at times and distracted them all from the pain and discomfort physical therapy sometimes brought. Music lulled everyone to sleep, masking the incessant beeps of the equipment surrounding the bed.
We were thrilled to meet Abby, Mia, Martha and Bob- and treat them to an extraordinary night of music featuring Sheila E., Michael Franti & Spearhead, Goapele, Judith Hill, Ozamatli and the most incredibly talented youth musicians representing Oakland as a party of Elevate Oakland, a philanthropic endeavor to improve academic achievement and increase student attendance by providing creative and relevant curriculums through Music and Arts Education in Oakland.
Abby, Mia, Martha & Bob- Life Is Better With YOU!
